# Visibility in assistant answers: are you named, and does the traffic arrive

People increasingly ask an assistant instead of typing into a search box, and the answer names a handful of companies. This section shows whether the client brand gets in there, which assistant crawlers visit their site, and how many people actually arrived from answers. Not musing about the future of search, but three things you can measure.

## What gets measured

- **Mentions**: Answers checked against a list of queries every 7 days
- **Crawlers**: Which assistant crawlers came to the site and what they read
- **Traffic**: Sessions that arrived from assistant answers, next to ordinary traffic
- **Access**: Whether the site is open to the crawlers that answer questions, and what they receive
- **A file for machines**: A product description and a page map in a separate file for answer engines
- **Markup**: Organisation, product, pages, questions and answers - as one connected graph

The crawlers that answer questions and the crawlers that collect text for training are different groups, and you decide about them separately.

## What the section does

### Is the brand named in the answers

Against the list of queries that matter to the client, every 7 days the system checks whether the brand appears in the answers and in what company. You see more than a yes or no: you see who is named alongside.

- The share of queries where the brand is mentioned
- Which competitors are named alongside
- A week-by-week history rather than a one-off snapshot

### Which crawlers visit the site

Assistant crawlers come for the content of a page either when someone has asked a question, or in advance so they can quote it later. The log shows who came, what they read, and whether access has been closed to them by mistake.

- A log of assistant crawler visits by date
- The pages they read most often
- A check that access has not been closed to them by accident

### How many people arrived from answers

A click through from an assistant answer is an ordinary session with a recognisable source. The section shows these separately so the channel is visible in the report rather than dissolving into direct traffic.

- Sessions from assistant answers on a line of their own
- Landing pages and behaviour after the click
- A comparison with ordinary search traffic

### What gets published for this to work

For an assistant to quote you, it needs something to quote. Pages get markup as one connected graph, the site gets a separate file with a product description and a page map, and every article and landing page gets a Markdown version.

- Markup for the organisation, the product, the pages and the questions
- A file with the product description for answer engines
- Markdown versions of the pages at the same addresses

## From a list of queries to a line in the report

The section needs no infrastructure work: a list of queries and the client site connected is enough.

1. **Set the queries** - The ones the client should be found and named for.
2. **A check every 7 days** - Answers are collected and read for mentions of the brand and its competitors.
3. **Read the crawler log** - Who came, what they read, whether access is closed.
4. **Count the traffic** - Sessions from answers on a line of their own in the analytics and in the client report.

## Figures from the code

- 7 days - between mention checks
- 7 - languages of public pages for machines
- 4 - languages for every blog topic

## What the section does not do

- It does not promise you a place in the answers: it measures, it does not guarantee.
- It does not count a mention in an answer as a visit - traffic is counted separately.
- It does not open the site to crawlers that collect text for training without an explicit decision from the owner.
- It does not pass a one-off snapshot off as a trend: the history is shown week by week.

## Questions and answers

### How is a brand mention checked?

Against the list of queries that matter to the client, every 7 days, answers are collected and read for mentions of the brand and the competitors named beside it. The history is kept, not just the latest snapshot.

### How is traffic from answers different from ordinary traffic?

In its source: the click comes from recognisable answer engine addresses. The section shows those sessions on a line of their own so the channel is visible in the client report.

### What does a site need for an assistant to quote it?

Open access for the crawlers that answer questions, connected markup across the pages, a separate file with the product description, and Markdown versions of the pages. The system publishes all of that for its own site and checks it on client sites.

### Can I block text collection for training and still allow quoting?

Yes, they are different groups of crawlers, and you decide about them separately in the machine access settings.

## Check whether a client is named in the answers and see who visits their site

The first 14 days are free on any plan and you do not need a card to start. The crawler log starts filling up on day one.
